Your compassion for your mother is entirely because you understand, good for you for taking the time to learn. If everyone were like you, there wouldn't be any stigma maybe. Hang in there, I know it's not easy, but she needs you. Thank you for sharing your story with us :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09819036606452798987noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3939656826821637036.post-46700602653485924922013-02-21T06:29:06.932-08:002013-02-21T06:29:06.932-08:00Mental illness is scary. if I tell people I have m...Mental illness is scary. if I tell people I have mental illness in my family they tell me they are sorry. my mother is schizophrenia and her own family is affraid of her. and I dont blame them. I'm not afraid of her because I understand her. she accuses people of doing evil things to her! So there is where the negitive thoughts and words come from with mental illness. I don't want what she has. it has put her through the ringer. But I still look at her like she's normal. shewants what everyone else wants. I wish that mental illness was taught in high school. more people need to be aware of the different illnesses and understand them. I use it so frequently as a philosopher of mind (e.g. mental states, mental function or mental representation) that it seems rather inocuos to me. Doesn't this highlight that if it's the way that a word is used that makes it offensive, or hurtful, there are attitudes prior to it's use that better deserve our attention? Surely this is at least worth considering, before we start selecting non-words to be chucked down the memory hole?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02732689124470391439noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3939656826821637036.post-85714170309102529582013-02-19T09:28:40.190-08:002013-02-19T09:28:40.190-08:00Why can't we simply say "I am sick" ...Why can't we simply say "I am sick" or "I am ill". When my bipolar disorder causes me challenges, I say "I am not feeling well today". Most people don't ask. If they do, I own it-"I am bipolar & I am sick". Illness is Illness no matter what part of your body it impacts or how its symptoms manifest.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3939656826821637036.post-70859220706283331412013-02-18T18:09:00.622-08:002013-02-18T18:09:00.622-08:00Thanks, Shira, for that quote! If I understand it ...Thanks, Shira, for that quote! If I understand it correctly, the labels we assign things have an intellectual idea behind them which may not be in keeping with the true meaning. If that's right, I agree. Our language is cultural laden with values and perception. For example, for a smaller framed woman, would you prefer to be called "skinny" or "slim"? Both mean essentially the same thing but society has decided skinny is bad, right? Thanks, again.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09819036606452798987noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3939656826821637036.post-49985899487822023572013-02-18T17:16:47.882-08:002013-02-18T17:16:47.882-08:00Here's a quote from a book I'm reading, Wi...Here's a quote from a book I'm reading, Within a Budding Grove, by Marcel Proust, that immediately struck a chord, as I've been thinking of the power of the words we choose, as well. It's a bit wordy, but I am sharing anyway.<br /><br />'...If God the Father had created things by naming them, it was by taking away their names or giving them other names that (my artist friend) Elstir created them anew. The names which designate things correspond invariably to an intellectual notion, alien to our true impressions, and compelling us to eliminate from them everything that is not in keeping with the notion."Shira Raiderhttp://www.twitter.com/thebalancedmindnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3939656826821637036.post-39576736405186838332013-02-18T11:29:45.784-08:002013-02-18T11:29:45.784-08:00You're very welcome, Nora! Changing people's perceptions with regard "mental" illness will hopefully make them uncomfortable using such a term and hav the effect we all desire. Thank you again for you thought provoking and sensitively written blog. I look forward to reading more. Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02349733414849792228noreply@blogger.com
